Dear Healthcare Professional,

Welcome to the July edition of our eNewsletter aimed to keep you updated with the latest news in infant nutrition.

Responsive feeding: Strategies to promote healthy mealtime interactions

Newborn

Responsive feeding is part of the two-way relationship between a parent and their baby where the parent recognises the baby’s communication of feelings of hunger and fullness through their behaviour and responds appropriately. Responsive feeding is particularly relevant during complementary feeding as young children progress from an exclusively milk-based liquid diet to the family diet and self-feeding. The period of complementary feeding includes multiple developmental changes that may threaten a successful transition and lead to growth and feeding problems. The aim of this Nestlé Nutrition Institute article1, found here, is to examine how parents and young children navigate the progression in feeding, with an emphasis on complementary feeding, and to address the following topics: navigating the progression of feeding development, provision of responsive feeding, preventing or resolving growth and feeding problems, responsive feeding research, and strategies to promote healthy mealtime interactions.

Complementary feeding with SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk

As complementary feeding progresses foods become an increasing part of the diet and milk feeds decline. SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is tailored to support the older infant’s diet as complementary feeding becomes established. It contains more iron than a first infant milk to support the increase in iron requirements at this stage.

SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is also the lowest protein follow-on milk in the UK & Ireland2 - 6 at 1.3 g/100 g. Survey data has shown that older infants consume more protein than necessary during complementary feeding7 - 9.

In March 2011 Nestlé, the parent company of SMA Nutrition, became the first breastmilk substitute (BMS) manufacturer to be included in the FTSE4Good Index.

FTSE4Good is a responsible investment index designed to help investors identify companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards. It is the only responsible investment index that has defined objective criteria on the responsible marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

In order to achieve this, Nestlé is independently reviewed every 18 months to demonstrate that it meets a set of environmental and social criteria, including the responsible marketing of breast milk substitutes (BMS Criteria).

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. If a decision to use an infant formula is taken, it is important to give instructions on correct preparation methods, emphasising that unboiled water, unsterilised bottles or incorrect dilution can all lead to illness. SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby’s individual needs.
