Dear Healthcare Professional,

RE: CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) - Update on stock availability

I'm sure that COVID-19 is a real concern for you and for the families you support, their health and wellbeing will be your top priority.

I wanted to write to you to let you know that everyone at SMA® Nutrition is working around the clock to keep up with the unprecedented increase in demand that we have seen over the last few weeks.

I know it's upsetting for parents when they can't find the baby milk they need, this could result in them contacting you for guidance therefore, I thought I would share with you some of the steps we have taken to try and manage these extraordinary circumstances.

We have increased the amount of baby milk we produce in our factories, we have also been working closely with retailers to make sure that we get our baby milks to individual stores as quickly as possible.

Hopefully these measures will help improve availability for all families. If they still struggle to find what they need, please advise them to speak to the store customer services or try a different shop. Local pharmacies should also be able to order it for them. Shops are regularly restocking the shelves but if parents continue to find it challenging to find then please do come back to us.

We recognise that in these uncertain times you may have many questions coming from parents, so our expert Careline is there to speak with you 24/7 for all concerns. Although our Careline is not able to sell baby milk directly or advise on which shops have stock, we will do our best to help you as you support parents, so please do not hesitate to reach out.

You can reach our SMA® Nutrition Careline on 0800 081 8180 (UK) or
1800 931 832 (Ireland).

Kind regards

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. If a decision to use an infant formula is taken, it is important to give instructions on correct preparation methods, emphasising that unboiled water, unsterilised bottles or incorrect dilution can all lead to illness.
