Supporting parents with responsive feeding

Responsive feeding is when a parent recognises the signs of hunger and acts only on these to initiate feeding, as opposed to a fixed feeding regime. Responsive feeding allows an infant to feed according to their own appetite and requirements,
helping to protect against overfeeding, accelerated growth and the associated adverse long term health consequences. Encouraging an infant’s ability to self-regulate is especially important for those infants
who are bottle fed - read our
summary of a clinical paper by Li et al (2010)
which investigates the impact of feeding method upon growth rates.

As a healthcare professional, do you offer parents advice and tips on responsive feeding? You may find UNICEFs top tips useful to share with parents.

Infant Growth: A public health priority

A group of leading health professionals with expertise in breastfeeding and nutrition in the early years met in London to discuss the importance of growth in the 1st 1000 days (from conception until the age of 2) upon later life health outcomes.

The panel highlighted the importance of dispelling the myth that ‘bigger is better’ when talking about infant weight gain and the possible benefits of reducing protein in infant diets.

A summary of the key findings of this meeting were published in The Journal of Health Visiting and this is available for you to view and download in our resources section.

Our new SMA® PRO product range - available now

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognised that protein intake in infants is in excess of requirements, and suggests a reduction of protein quantity in infant formula and follow-on formula could be considered.

SMA® PRO First Infant Milk has a high quality, low quantity protein profile and is the only formula clinically proven to achieve a growth rate comparable with a breastfed baby.1

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. • SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months of life. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby’s individual needs. • SMA® PRO Toddler Milk is suitable for young children from 1–3 years, as part of a healthy balanced diet and it is not a breast milk substitute. Breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible.
