Dear Healthcare Professional,

Welcome to the December edition of our eNewsletter aimed to keep you updated with the latest news in infant nutrition.

This month we wanted to highlight the many successful and educational events that we have attended over the past year. You can visit our website to see Maude Grant, our Medical Communications Manager delivering a talk on the First 1000 Days at the Maternity, Midwifery and Baby Forum.
We would also like to introduce our SMA Careline® team who are available 24/7 to provide you with support and advice.
Finally, read about the importance of appropriate growth rates in infants and how our SMA® PRO First Infant Milk and SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk are specifically formulated with a lower protein content.

We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas,

Kind regards,

The SMA® Professional Team
Event Highlights 2016
It has been an exciting 2016 with the SMA® Professional team attending over 100 events all over the UK including the Child Health Forums, Journal of Health Visiting Conference, Primary Care Conference, REaSoN Neonatal Meeting and Unite-CPHVA Annual Professional Conference.

We also attended the Maternity, Midwifery & Baby Forums held in Manchester, Birmingham and London and our Medical Communications Manager, Maude Grant spoke on the topic of Nutrition in the First 1000 Days and its impact on long-term health. Health experts have identified that the first 1000 days of a baby’s life is a vitally important period.1 ‘Programming’, which takes place during the first 1000 days from conception to 2 years, has a significant influence on long-term health outcomes.2 Find out more about the first 1000 days on our website.

Protein and the Importance of Appropriate Growth Rates
SMA Products SMA Products
Because the protein in breast milk is adapted to a baby’s needs3,a breastfed baby tends to grow more slowly than a formula fed baby4. This slower growth rate has shown to have significant long-term health benefits, including a lower risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes5.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognised that protein intake in infants is in excess of requirements, and suggests a reduction of protein quantity in infant formula and follow-on formula could be considered6.

SMA® PRO First Infant Milk and SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk provide 6% less protein than Aptamil, Cow & Gate and HiPP over 12 months7.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that pregnant women and new mothers be informed on the benefits and superiority of breastfeeding – in particular the fact that it provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for babies. Mothers should be given guidance on the preparation for, and maintenance of, lactation, with special emphasis on the importance of a well-balanced diet both during pregnancy and after delivery. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks should be discouraged since it will have a negative effect on breastfeeding. Similarly, mothers should be warned of the difficulty of reversing a decision not to breastfeed. Before advising a mother to use an infant formula, she should be advised of the social and financial implications of her decision: for example, if a baby is exclusively bottle-fed, more than one can (400 g) per week will be needed, so the family circumstances and costs should be kept in mind. Mothers should be reminded that breast milk is not only the best, but also the most economical food for babies. If a decision to use an infant formula is taken, it is important to give instructions on correct preparation methods, emphasising that unboiled water, unsterilised bottles or incorrect dilution can lead to illness. SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby’s individual needs.
