Good news! Summer's on its way back - we thought it had forgotten us! Warmer temperatures can, however, bring a new set of challenges.

Whether you're travelling to hotter climates, packing a bag for a day at the park or combatting a rise in temperature at home, there are steps you can take to make sure your little one is comfortable and safe.

We've put some of your most frequently asked 'summer' questions to our expert Careline team for their top tips.

"I'm worried about my baby overheating at night when it's very hot"

Babies will sleep most comfortably when their room is between 16 to 20°C. Help keep bedrooms cool by closing blinds during the day and open the window if the air outside is cooler. Keep nightwear and bedclothes to a minimum if it's very warm, a nappy and a single sheet (tucked in firmly below baby's shoulder) will suffice. A cool bath at 36°C will help baby cool down before the bedtime feed. If travelling, pack a room thermometer for younger ones to help you keep an eye on temperature. Portable fans in the room can help but avoid pointing directly at your baby.

"We're going to be on a long flight... is baby milk allowed in hand luggage?"

Yes, when travelling with a baby you're allowed to take enough baby food, baby milk and sterilised water for the journey. There is no legal limit to how much you can take so it's a good idea to bring extra to account for delays. For certainty, it's always best to check with your individual airport before flying.

"I'm confused. Should I be using sunscreen on my baby or not?"

The NHS advises that babies less than 6 months old should be kept out of direct sunlight. At this age their skin does not have enough melanin pigment to protect them from the sun.
Older babies 6 months+ should be kept out of the sun as much as possible, especially when the sun is at its strongest in the day (11am-3pm). Use a sunshade, a UV suit and hat to protect them, and a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30, applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied regularly. Make sure the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
