Week 12

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 12th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 12? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Believe it or not, your baby is now fully formed! The limbs, bones, organs and features are in place and, over the next few weeks, your baby will grow rapidly in size and weight. The placenta will grow quickly too, with the number of blood vessels increasing to keep up with your baby's growing demand for nutrients and oxygen.

Although your baby doesn't have any hair yet, hair follicles are starting to develop on the skin and toe and fingernails are forming. The vocal cords are developed, but your baby won't make any sounds until after they’re born.

What's happening to you?

You should be having your dating scan around now. This is offered to every pregnant woman between 10 and 13 weeks to establish exactly how old your baby is and most sonographers will be able to give you an accurate due date. It will also show you whether you are carrying more than one baby. It’s an exciting moment meeting your baby for the first time, so encourage your partner or a friend to come with you.

The sonographer will squirt some cold gel onto your tummy and pass a hand-held device over your bump. You’ll then see a fuzzy black-and-white image of your baby on a TV monitor. The sonographer will measure your baby carefully and point out your baby’s major organs. You should be able to take a picture home as a keepsake (there may be a small charge for this).

In some areas of the UK you will also be offered a nuchal translucency scan to screen for Down’s Syndrome. If it isn’t available on the NHS in your area, you may be able to have it done privately – ask your midwife what’s available near you.

Expert Opinion
"At 12 weeks pregnant the foetus is around 6cm length and weighs about 20g. The feet are almost 1cm long and the foetus can move spontaneously. The face is beginning to look like a baby's in profile. The brain is fully formed and the foetus may even suck their thumb."
