Week 17

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 17th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 17? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby is laying down fat deposits and is starting to plump up a bit. This layer of fat helps regulate your baby’s temperature and also provides a source of energy once its born.

Your baby’s torso is growing rapidly in proportion to the head and distinctive facial features are starting to develop, including clearly visible eyebrows. All in all, your baby is beginning to look much more like the baby you’ll give birth to.

Your baby’s nervous system is more sophisticated now and its reflexes developing, so prodding and loud noises may startle it.

What's happening to you?

There are lots of myths about sex in pregnancy. Some people worry it will harm the baby. Others worry that sex will bring on premature labour.

In fact, unless your midwife or doctor says otherwise, sex is perfectly safe during pregnancy. And, until your body is ready for labour there's no risk that sex will bring it on.

There are plenty of myths about determining the sex of your baby too. You may have been told you're having a boy because you're ‘all up front’ or that your baby is a girl because you crave sweet foods. It's all good fun, but there is only one way to tell the sex – your sonographer may be able to tell if they are able to see your baby clearly at your 20-week scan.

Cravings are another great source of pregnancy myths, like mothers-to-be eating coal or chalk. This does happen but it's pretty rare. Any cravings you get are more likely to be of the banana-and-peanut-butter-sandwich type.

Expert Opinion
"Your body needs iron in pregnancy for both yours and your growing baby’s needs so it’s important to eat iron rich foods, like meat and dark green leafy vegetables. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan ensure you eat lots of beans, lentils and peas. Remember, drinks or foods rich in vitamin C like orange juice and peppers will help your body absorb more of the iron from non-meat iron-rich foods."
