What's happening to your baby?
Your baby is starting to be a real little individual. Even though you may not notice them yet, your baby is starting to have regular rest and activity periods similar to those it’ll have after it’s born.
Your baby can move its eyes now, although they’re still protected by sealed eyelids. The ears are in their final position and are starting to stick out from the head more. Your baby will also go through the motions of crying, although without air to breathe no sounds are made yet.
A black sticky substance called ‘meconium’ is beginning to accumulate in your baby’s bowel. It’s made up of waste products extracted from the amniotic fluid swallowed by your baby and will usually be expelled after birth as the first bowel movement.
Around now, a greasy white coating called vernix also appears on your baby's skin to protect it. |

What's happening to you?
Don't be surprised if you start feeling pains in your groin around now. Your uterus is emerging from your pelvis and, as it does, it stretches the muscles and ligaments that support it. You may feel shooting pains on either side of your groin as you stand up or feel as though you can't straighten up properly. These feelings should pass in a few weeks, but do check with your midwife if you’re worried.
With your bump growing bigger every day, it's time to treat yourself to some maternity clothes. Make sure you get the basics covered first – a good pair of maternity jeans, some smart work trousers and a couple of tops will come in handy. |

"It's easy to mistake your baby's movements for air bubbles at first. Your baby is still tiny and your uterus is quite low, so you'll feel gentle fluttering movements low down in your tummy to begin with. You're more likely to notice them if you are still and quiet, so why not turn on some relaxing music, put your feet up and tune in to what your baby's up to."
