Week 19

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 19th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 19? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

By now, your baby's arms and legs are in proportion to the body and to each other. The nervous system works more quickly and efficiently. As a result your baby’s movements become stronger and more complex. Your baby may try to grasp the umbilical cord or even sit cross-legged!

Over the next 10 weeks or so, your baby will be most active. If you haven't felt any movements before now, you soon will!

The part of the brain that governs the senses is developing, too, and your baby is starting to react more strongly to different tastes, touches and sounds. Your baby may stop sucking if it senses a bitter taste in the amniotic fluid and it may kick vigorously if prodded through your bump.

At this stage, your baby’s brain, spine, stomach, bladder, kidneys, hands and feet can all be checked on the ultrasound scan.

What's happening to you?

Congratulations, you’re halfway through your pregnancy. Around this time you’ll be offered a 20-week scan (or ‘anomaly scan’) to check how your baby is developing and to check the position of your placenta. If you’re unsure about having the scan, speak to your midwife who’ll answer any questions to help you decide.

If all’s going to plan this may be your last chance to see your baby before the birth, so you may want to take your partner with you.

At this scan you might be able to find out the sex of your baby. If you want it to be a surprise, let the sonographer know. And if you want a photo, ask the sonographer. Most hospitals let you buy one to share with friends and family.

Expert Opinion
"At 19 weeks of pregnancy the foetus weighs around 250g. Your placenta continues to grow and nourish your baby and the genitals and features of your baby's heart should be recognisable during an ultrasound scan. Your baby will increase its weight by more than 15 times between now and delivery."
