What's happening to your baby?
You may be having your anomaly scan around now. This is when the sonographer checks your baby's major organs and growth. They'll also check the placenta is working properly and the amount of amniotic fluid. If you want to know your baby's sex it should be obvious now but remember, not all hospitals will tell you.
You'll almost certainly be feeling your baby's movements by now and, just like you, it'll have periods of rest and activity. Like lots of mums-to-be you may well find that they're at their most active just when you want to sleep or rest. Welcome to motherhood! |

What's happening to you?
The second trimester is often referred to as the ‘golden period’. Morning sickness has (usually) gone, you have more energy, your bump isn’t too big and with any luck you’re sleeping well. Not everyone’s so lucky though, so don’t panic if you aren’t feeling on top of the world.
As your skin stretches to accommodate your growing baby, you may find your body feels itchy. This is more likely to affect you if it's your first pregnancy, you're expecting twins or you've put on a lot of weight during your pregnancy. Try keeping your body cool by wearing loose clothing and apply moisturising cream regularly. Speak to your midwife or GP if you are concerned or the itching persists.
During pregnancy your heart and lungs have to work much harder to supply your body with the oxygen you need, so you may find yourself feeling a little breathless. Also, as your baby grows, your uterus expands upwards, pushing against your lungs, so even if you aren’t exerting yourself, you could feel short of breath. Again, if you have any concerns, speak to your midwife or GP. |

"Pregnancy is a great time to make some healthy changes to your eating habits. If you aren’t eating a varied diet or if you are vegetarian or vegan, you may find taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement beneficial. If you are taking a separate Omega 3 (DHA) supplement with a multivitamin, check that it doesn’t contain vitamin A as too much vitamin A can be harmful for your baby."
