Week 23

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 23rd week of pregnancy.

Not at week 23? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Now that the inner ear is fully developed your baby will be able to hear sounds from inside and outside the womb, as well as being able to tell which way up they are.

Your baby's really gearing up for life outside the womb now. The liver is producing enzymes to break down old red blood cells, and the pancreas is producing insulin to break down sugars in the blood. Also, although your baby's still breathing in amniotic fluid, the lungs are getting ready to breathe air.

What's happening to you?

One symptom lots of women get as their pregnancy progresses is increased vaginal discharge. As long as it’s not accompanied by itching or an unpleasant smell, it’s perfectly normal.

Bleeding gums is also common, so take extra care when brushing your teeth and see your dentist regularly. Your feet and ankles may get a little swollen too, or your fingers may be a little puffy. Again, this is nothing to be concerned about. Drinking plenty of water should help reduce it, and keep mobile to help aid circulation.

To help counter stretch marks drink lots of water, keep an eye on your weight gain and rub moisturiser into the marks.

You’ll be due another antenatal appointment in a few weeks. If you’re worried about anything in the meantime give your midwife a call.

Expert Opinion
"You may hardly recognise the body you see in the mirror these days. Your waist is long gone and your breasts have probably gone up a cup size. The pigmented areas around your nipples are darker and you may notice a dark line running down the middle of your bump (linea nigra). These changes will be reversed after your baby is born as your body adapts to its new role."

This week’s top tip
You're centre of gravity has shifted so you might feel a bit clumsy. Don't worry, this will go back to normal after birth. Take extra care in the sun from now on. In some women, pregnancy hormones can cause dark patches to appear on your face (chloasma), and the sun will make these even darker.
