What's happening to your baby?
Your baby’s spine is becoming strong and supportive and your baby’s putting on weight rapidly (about 90g a week) so you may feel more hungry. Because of this growth spurt, your baby is starting to fill your uterus and can’t fully stretch out any more.
Your baby’s nostrils, which have been closed till now, open. The lungs are still small, but your baby will start to produce surfactant – a liquid that stops the air sacs in our lungs collapsing when we exhale.
Your baby is now said to be “viable”, which means if they were to be born this week they would have roughly a 40% chance of survival. |

What's happening to you?
Have you started thinking about what you need to buy for your baby yet?
Firstly, your baby will need somewhere to sleep. Many parents prefer to start with a Moses basket as they are inexpensive, comfortable and portable. But you may prefer to go straight for a cot. Whichever you choose, ensure you buy a new mattress.
You still have plenty of time to decide between disposable or reusable nappies. Whatever you choose, make sure you have plenty as newborns need their nappies changed frequently.
If you’ve got a car, a car seat is essential (most hospitals won't let you travel home without one).
If you plan to breastfeed, you'll need some nursing bras and breast pads.
If you are going to express your milk, or you’re planning to bottle feed, don't forget the sterilising equipment as well as bottles and teats.

"A 4D baby scan is now available and gives you a unique opportunity to bond with your baby. 4D scans let you see your baby moving in your womb. During the scan, the placenta and size of your baby will be checked, and so will your baby’s heartbeat. 4D scans are best performed between weeks 26 to 32 weeks in order to capture detailed animated facial movements. 4D scans are not available on the NHS and have to be arranged privately."
