Week 25

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 25th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 25? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby’s brain is very active now as there’s a lot going on in their body.

More and more blood vessels are appearing in their lungs. Once your baby is born these will carry oxygen from the lungs around their body. The lungs are also producing more surfactant – a liquid that helps to keep the air sacs open – and this will boost your baby’s chances of survival if they’re born prematurely.

Although your baby is filling more space in your womb, they will still move a lot and you may find the non-stop somersaulting quite tiring.

Your baby is now getting familiar with certain sounds, including you and your partner’s voice and will find them comforting both now and after they’re born.

What's happening to you?

Now’s a good time to let your partner know how much you rely on them. Explain that you need to relax and stay well and that you appreciate their understanding when you have the odd, irrational mood that pregnancy can bring on.

Try to get your partner to join you at antenatal appointments if possible. You’ll find that seeing your baby on a scan, or hearing your baby’s heartbeat together, helps you both bond with it.

Going to antenatal classes together is great way to gather information, but also to meet and exchange notes with other parents-to-be.

The point at which your partner can really start to come into their own is during labour. A good labour partner is calm, assertive and positive. They are also someone who has checked out the parking situation at the hospital and knows what’s in the hospital bag!

This week’s top tip
It’s not just mums-to-be that need to think about their lifestyle. Being a new parent is a good time for both of you to look at your diet and get yourself healthy in time for the arrival of your child. And if you both give up the foods and drinks that are best avoided during pregnancy it makes it a little easier.
