Week 27

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 27th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 27? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby is really beginning to fill the space in your womb and is spending more time curled up in the ‘foetal’ position.

Your baby is also looking less wrinkly as there’s more body fat around its abdomen and limbs. This helps your baby retain body heat, although this will only become really important after birth.

As more fat is laid down, the lanugo hair that has covered your baby’s body until now starts disappearing and will more or less have gone, along with the protective coating of white vernix by the time your baby is born.

Now your baby’s eyes are open it’s blinking more often and it’s more responsive to visual stimulation. Your baby can focus too, but only to a distance of about 15-20cm.

Have you noticed your baby having a fit of hiccups yet? Most mums-to-be find the rhythmic twitches they cause quite funny and comforting.

What's happening to you?

A healthy diet is important for everyone but especially when you are pregnant. During pregnancy, your diet not only needs to provide for your usual requirements, it also needs to provide for your growing baby. Your growing baby gets all of its nourishment through the umbilical cord, so if you are lacking in any vitamins and nutrients then your baby might lack them too.

Different women gain different amounts of weight during pregnancy, and your healthcare professional can advise you on this. If you have problems keeping your weight up or down during pregnancy, you should speak to your doctor or midwife.

Expert Opinion
"There is a common misconception that when you are pregnant you should eat for two. However, this isn’t the case, what is really important is that you eat a healthy and balanced diet. It is only really in the last trimester you need to have an extra 200 calories a day, which you can get from eating two slices of bread or one small 125g pot of low fat yogurt and a banana."
