Week 28

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 28th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 28? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby is probably making its presence felt in no uncertain terms these days. Your body is producing less amniotic fluid so you can feel the movements more.

Your baby is also ‘breathing’ with a regular rhythm, drawing amniotic fluid into its lungs and pushing it out again. This helps the tiny tubes and air sacs in the lungs to develop and builds up the muscles your baby needs to breathe. Your baby’s lips and tongue are also very sensitive and finger sucking is a favourite pastime.

What's happening to you?

You’ll be having another appointment with your midwife this week, and one of the things she’ll check is your iron levels. It’s normal for this to drop a little in pregnancy, but if they drop too far you can end up feeling tired, weak and breathless. If necessary your midwife will prescribe some iron supplements for you.

Another pregnancy side effect you may have noticed is varicose veins. The hormone ‘relaxin’ makes blood vessels more elastic in pregnancy which can lead to blood pooling in your leg veins. Try to put your feet up whenever you can and consider wearing support stockings.

If you have any disturbances in your vision, persistent headaches or sudden swelling around your face, wrists and ankles, you should tell your midwife. These are all potential signs of a serious condition called pre-eclampsia, and need to be checked out urgently.

Expert Opinion
"You’ll have fewer tests and scans in the third trimester, but your midwife will carry on doing routine checks – urine, blood pressure and so on – throughout your pregnancy. If you’re Rhesus negative, she’ll test your blood for antibodies at 28 weeks as well as checking your iron levels. Normally you would only be offered another scan if there is concern about your baby’s size or if you’re having twins."

This week’s top tip
You may have to alter your eating habits slightly if heartburn is getting you down. Try eating five small meals a day instead of three bigger ones and avoid eating at all just before bed.
Next week
Keep up with changes to your body.
All the best,
