What's happening to your baby?
By now you're probably used to your baby's regular waking and sleeping pattern. Now and again your baby will sleep for an unusually long time, but if you wish to check your baby’s movements, lie on your side for a couple of hours. You should feel at least 10 separate movements during this time. If you are worried about your baby’s activity, you can always speak to your midwife.
Your baby's brain has grown so much it is starting to develop folds in order to fit inside the skull. A few weeks back it looked quite smooth, but now it's taking on that wrinkled walnut-like shape we're all familiar with.
The protective coat of myelin developing around the nerves and spinal cord has reached the nerves at the base of the brain. That means messages can travel to and from the brain quicker, allowing your baby to do much more complicated things.
Your baby’s bone marrow is producing all the red blood cells needed and the immune system is beginning to work. Your baby would have a very good chance of surviving if born now.

What's happening to you?
If you’ve been lucky enough to have a break from the night time toilet trips for the past three months, your growing baby is probably pressing on your bladder again, once again making frequent trips to the loo a regular occurrence. Do make sure you go when you feel the urge, because holding on can make you susceptible to urinary tract infections.
At this stage of pregnancy it’s not just your baby that’s growing. It’s your feet too! You may find your shoe size increases by half a size or so during pregnancy. Don’t panic, they usually shrink back after the birth. In the meantime, make sure you invest in some comfortable flats that support your feet well.
Time for a new bra? Experts recommend this is a good time to get fitted for a new maternity bra to support the increasing weight of your breasts. A good maternity bra will have wide shoulder straps, support panels and adjustable back fastenings to ‘grow with you’ as you increase in size. This bra should see you through until your baby’s born. |

You may now start having Braxton Hicks contractions and it's easy to mistake them for the real thing. Unlike real contractions, though, they are irregular and tend to come and go. If you are concerned contact your midwife. |
