Week 31

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 31st week of pregnancy.

Not at week 31? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby’s brain and nervous system are fully developed, although its movements would still be poorly co-ordinated if it was born now. Your baby’s sucking reflex is fully developed, but it could still do with a little more practice before feeding from the breast.

What's happening to you?

By now your body is preparing to breastfeed your baby. You may already have noticed a little clear liquid leaking from your breasts. This is nothing to be concerned about, but you may want to buy some breast pads if it happens regularly.

It's also time to make preparations to welcome your little one home. You’ll need nappies and a place for your baby to sleep.

Think about how you'll be getting around with your baby too. Will you use a sling to begin with or go straight for a pram suitable for a newborn baby? And an age-appropriate baby car seat is an absolute must if you plan to make any car journeys. Do make sure you can fit the car seat properly before your baby’s due date.

What else will your baby need? Find out.

Expert Opinion
"It's incredibly exciting packing little suits and socks into a bag ready for your baby's birth. It makes it all very real somehow. The midwives may help you bathing your baby for the first time, so you may want to pop in a hooded towel. Some muslins and a baby blanket will come in handy too. Not all maternity units supply formula so do check beforehand if you are planning to bottlefeed."

This week’s top tip
Research shows that having a supportive birth partner can shorten labour and make it a more positive experience. Plan your baby's birth together so that your birth partner can give you the best possible support on the day.

Important Notice: Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have a negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant milks and on all matters of infant feeding. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant milk should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard.
All the best,
