Week 38

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 38th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 38? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby’s eyes are now very sensitive and it will turn its head towards a source of light. Babies of Asian or African descent usually have dark grey or brown eyes at birth. Caucasian babies eyes are initially dark blue. Your baby’s eyes need to be exposed to the light for their true colour to develop, and you won’t really know their final colour until six months to a year later.

Your baby's eyes also don’t have tear ducts yet. These won’t open until your baby’s a few weeks old, so don’t expect any tears in the early days.

What's happening to you?

Your hospital bag is probably packed, but you may want to check it one more time to make sure you have everything you need for you and your baby (our handy helpsheet may help). You may find it easier to stay organised if you pack three smaller bags rather than one huge bag – one for your hospital stay, one for your baby and one for the labour itself.

Have you been having lots of Braxton Hicks contractions? Some women find they start to have more of these practice contractions as the due date approaches. You'll know when you're in labour though, because your contractions will become longer, stronger and closer together.

It's more important than ever to keep up your pelvic floor exercises now. Pregnancy and giving birth place a lot of strain on your pelvic floor and some woman find they have stress incontinence for a while after the birth. Keeping your pelvic floor toned will help avoid this.

See how to do pelvic floor exercises.

Expert Opinion
"It's very natural to feel nervous as well as excited as your baby's birth approaches. Do talk to your midwife about any anxieties you may have. They may be able to set your mind at rest or help you come up with strategies to overcome them. Don't forget that women's bodies are perfectly designed to give birth and that having a baby is extremely safe."

This week’s top tip
Make sure your partner has a trial run installing the baby's car seat. Most hospitals won't let you leave without one in the car and you and new baby won’t want to be waiting while your partner wrestles with it.
Next week
Getting rest and sleep before your baby arrives.
All the best,
