What's happening to your baby?
If you're feeling tired it’s no wonder – your baby has had a growth spurt and is now around 1.6cm long.
Your baby’s face is well formed and the brain is growing yet the head still looks large in proportion to the rest of the body.
The tadpole-like tail is disappearing and all the organs are in place and starting to function. Fingers and toes can clearly be seen, although they are still a little webbed. The arms are starting to bend at the wrists.
Your baby’s sex organs are starting to develop as well, but it isn't possible to tell boys from girls just yet. |

What's happening to you?
Looking after your baby also means looking after yourself, and that means getting some exercise.
Walking and swimming are ideal because they give you a good cardiovascular workout without putting strain on your joints. Lots of women find yoga and pilates helpful because it improves flexibility and helps you relax. Do make sure your instructor is used to teaching pregnant women though.
How are you sleeping? You may feel exhausted during the day only to toss and turn at night because of frequent trips to the loo or sore, tender breasts. To get more rest, cut down the amount of fluid you drink in the evening and try to get used to sleeping on your side – which you'll need to do once your bump comes along. For more on this, read looking after your body during pregnancy.
If you need an early scan, you may be having it around now. This is usually done if you've had a problem with a previous pregnancy, had fertility treatment or had some pain or bleeding. Try not to worry – most early scans show that everything is progressing normally. |

"At eight weeks the embryo measures about 18mm in length. Feet and hand buds have appeared but aren’t visible on the scan. The yolk sac that feeds your baby is visible and can be seen within the gestation sac. The heart is beating about 170 beats per minute."
