Week 9

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

You're now in your 9th week of pregnancy.

Not at week 9? Update your due date here.
What's happening to your baby?

Your baby is starting to look much more like the newborn you’ll cuddle in your arms. The head is becoming more rounded and the ears are starting to look like proper little ears. The eyelids are forming and will gradually fuse together, staying tightly shut until about 26 weeks of pregnancy. Tiny milk teeth are starting to form, as well as a tongue, but the teeth won't emerge until your baby's about six months old.

The umbilical cord is short but coiled like a spring so your baby can move around easily. The arms and legs are still quite short and paddle-like but they’re beginning to bend at the elbows and knees.

What's happening to you?

If you haven't seen your GP since you found out you were pregnant, it's time to make an appointment.

Your GP will give you a quick check-up and answer any questions you may have. They’ll check that you’re taking vitamin D (10μg a day) and folic acid supplements (400 μg a day), which can help to reduce your baby's risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida. They'll also ask about your lifestyle, in particular whether you smoke or drink and ask you to make an appointment with a midwife.

Your booking appointment happens around week 10 and lasts about an hour. This gives your midwife plenty of time to do all the tests needed at this stage and to talk to you in detail about them. You’ll also be given your maternity notes which you’ll keep throughout your pregnancy. You can find out more about the tests and scans you’ll be offered here.

Expert Opinion
"There's a lot to take in at your first few antenatal appointments, but don't worry. Your midwife or doctor will give you plenty of information to take away and read in your own time. Make sure you’re clear why all the tests are done before having them and don't be afraid to ask questions – that's what we're here for."

This week’s top tip
If your pregnancy is uncomplicated, you'll probably see a midwife for most of your antenatal appointments rather than a doctor. It's a good idea to write down any questions before you see her, so you don't forget anything.
