Not long to go
It’s natural to be thinking about the birth of your baby around now, but once labour is over, feeding your baby is one of the first things you will do.
Breastfeeding comes naturally to some mums and babies but, for others, it can take a little practice, however your midwife can give you all the support you need. Our website has lots of help including a video and helpsheets on breastfeeding. Also, everyone on our SMA Careline Team is a mum and is here to help you. So they have all the latest health information and they know the day-to-day realities of caring for a baby.
You’ll find breastfeeding goes more smoothly if your baby is well attached to your breast, it helps your baby feed efficiently. |

Comfortable positions for breastfeeding
When it comes to breastfeeding, finding a position that’s comfortable for you and gives your baby easy access to your breast is what counts. Here are three to try:
- Cradle position - cradle your baby with its tummy to your tummy and its nose in line with your breast
- Underarm hold - your baby is tucked under your arm a bit like a rugby ball
- Lying down - you and your baby lie facing each other
If you find a position that suits you it’s fine to stick with it. |

Important Notice: Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have a negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant milks and on all matters of infant feeding. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant milk should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard. |
