Congratulations
You probably feel elated, exhausted and anxious all at the same time. That’s ok, it’s normal. Looking after yourself and getting to know your baby should be your main priority for now. And if you need any help, just ask your midwife, partner, mum or best friend.
How your baby’s developing
For now your baby’s limbs are still curled up just like they were in the womb. And their movements are jerky because they can’t control their muscles yet. Although tiny and uncoordinated, your baby is an expert feeder. Stroke their cheek with your nipple and they will immediately turn towards your breast, mouth open and ready to feed. This is called the ‘rooting’ reflex and it’s something all babies are born with.

Expert Advice: Breast or Bottle? |
Newborn babies can either be breastfed or bottle-fed with infant formula. The World Health Organisation and the Department of Health recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Why not talk to your midwife if you want more information and advice about feeding your baby. You can also call us for advice.

Making a note of when your baby feeds and for how long (if you’re breastfeeding), or how much is drunk (if you’re bottle-feeding), can help you feel more confident that your baby’s getting enough milk. |
Important Notice: Breastfeeding is best for babies. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have a negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant milks and on all matters of infant feeding. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant milk should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard. |
