Setting a routine
All babies fall into a natural sleep and feeding pattern at some point. It’s up to you to reinforce your baby's natural pattern, or nudge it slightly to suit you. There are many books available, which include suggested daily routines for your baby and how to introduce them. But at the end of the day it’s down to what suits you. Some parents like to get their baby to bed early so they can have some evening time to themselves, whereas others prefer to put their baby down for the night when they go to bed so they can get some sleep while their baby sleeps.
How your baby’s developing
Your baby’s control of their muscles is getting better all the time. In fact your baby may be able to hold their head up for a few seconds if you lie them down on their tummy. Have you noticed your baby playing with their hands too? They’re starting to understand who’s in control of them.

The colour and consistency of your baby’s poo depends on how old your baby is and how you are feeding it. Breastfed babies tend to poo more frequently and have softer poos than bottle-fed babies. As the weeks go by you’ll soon start to learn what is normal for your baby.

Studies show that up to 55% of babies are likely to experience minor but common feeding issues at some point in their first 6 months of life. This is completely normal, as it can take time for baby’s digestive system to develop. The most common feeding issues that babies may experience are colic, constipation, reflux and diarrhoea.

Important Notice: Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have a negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant milks and on all matters of infant feeding. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant milk should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard. |
