Month 23 news

Doctor or firefighter? By now your toddler may well love pretending to be a little adult. Toy phones and dressing up outfits can help them understand both the world and the different people around them. As they begin to speak a little more, you may also want to encourage them with singing and musical instruments too. Earplugs are optional!

The Expert View

Tummy troubles? As solid foods are introduced in to your baby's diet, constipation can be quite a common side effect. Obvious signs to look for include if your little one has a poo less than twice a week, or if it is often small and hard. If it's minor, there is plenty you can do to help – from warm baths to tummy massage. Find out more with our constipation checklist. If your baby is in pain or cries when passing a poo, talk to your GP or health visitor.

Need to know

Protein is marvellous thing. It's needed for growth and the maintenance and repair of body tissues, as well as to make enzymes that control many body functions. But whilst protein needs are proportionally higher for children than adults, there is such a thing as having too much – which may increase the risk of being overweight in later life. Find out more with our simple guide.

Tip: Fat isn't necessarily bad...

Believe it or not, toddlers generally require full fat varieties of products such as cheese or yogurts in order to get all the energy and vitamins they need. It also provides essential fatty acids that the body can't make itself.

Tip: Your little bookworm

By now your little one may have a favourite book. But if you'd like to expand their horizons and find more engaging stories, many libraries have reading clubs for toddlers. These can be a great time for them to socialise and for you both to bond.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health. SMA® PRO Toddler Milk is suitable for young children from 1-3 years, as part of a healthy balanced diet and it is not a breast milk substitute.
