17 months - a time for tears and tantrums (and for your toddler too)

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]

This month we’re talking about a couple of particularly testing areas – tantrums and sleep.

With increasing independence comes a desire for even more, which can bring on the dreaded Ts. And it’s important that your toddler still gets plenty of Zs to help with all that development.

For more information on month 17, have a look at our interactive timeline.

Understanding a temper tantrum.

Are they a lot of fuss and noise about nothing, or sparked by something more rational?

As you may have noticed, they’re all too common at month 17. But there’s really nothing to worry about. As frustrating as they are, tantrums are perfectly normal.

They can happen for a number of reasons. Your toddler may be finding it hard to express themselves. They might simply be tired or hungry. Or it could be more complex – triggered by an emotion such as jealousy or frustration.

In any case, try to find out the cause and sound surprised and interested if they tell you. Stay calm and wait for it to subside. But try not to give in, you don’t want your toddler thinking a tantrum is the key to getting what they want!

The magic of sleep

Toddlers still need as much sleep as a baby.

Toddlers up to the age of three usually sleep about 12 hours a day, with at least 11 of those being through the night.

Sleep is important because growth hormone is released encouraging normal growth and development. While your toddler is asleep, their brain makes sense of what’s happened during the day and aids the process of concentration. The first five years of brain development affect the rest of our learning lives.

Naps are also important, but now your toddler can probably do with just one solid nap of up to two hours in the afternoon (with increasing tantrums, couldn’t we all?). This can be done until they’re 3 or 4.

Some useful tiny tips
Lack of Vitamin D is an issue in the UK with 91% of 12-18 month olds not getting enough in their diets. Vitamin D plays a major role in the normal growth and development of bones in children. Toddlers can get Vitamin D in one of three ways, through natural action of sunlight on the skin*, vitamin drops, or foods containing Vitamin D e.g. eggs, oily fish and fortified milks or foods.
