Not at month 8? Update your baby's birth date here

Dear [*data('91.salutation')|html*]
Your baby is probably the proud owner of a few tiny teeth now, and if not they'll be coming though very shortly! If your baby has started to nibble on anything she can get her hands on, they may be teething. Try giving your little one chilled cooked carrot sticks or cucumber sticks from the fridge. They may also start trying to soothe themselves by chewing on their fingers, so try to keep your baby's hands clean.
Brushing your baby's teeth

It's usually your baby's two bottom front teeth that arrive first. Your baby is probably the proud owner of a few tiny teeth now. To keep them healthy, it’s important to start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they emerge. You’ll need a baby toothbrush that has soft bristles for tender gums and is small enough to fit into your baby’s mouth. You’ll also need some baby toothpaste, which contains less fluoride than adult toothpaste. Use a smear of toothpaste to gently brush all of your baby's teeth twice a day.

Expert Advice: Vitamin D & Iron
Iron is important for your baby's development so make sure you include foods like red meat, iron fortified cereals, eggs, green vegetables and beans in their diet. Your baby also needs vitamin D for healthy bones. The Department of Health recommends that all children from six months to five years old are given supplements, in the form of vitamin drops, which contain vitamins A, C and D. If your child is having 500ml of formula each day, they will not need the drops. Your health visitor can give you advice on vitamin drops and tell you where to get them. You’re entitled to free vitamin drops if you qualify for Healthy Start.

This week’s top tip
Some babies get an upset tummy and nappy rash when teething. If this happens, offer your baby extra drinks of cooled, boiled water and apply some barrier cream to their bottom at nappy changes. Teething shouldn’t make your baby ill, so do see your GP if symptoms persist.
All the best,
The SMA Baby Club
