You and your baby
Month 20 news
Timber! By now your toddler may be embracing their inner builder and could be able to stack three blocks on top of each other after being shown how. From this you might even be able to work out whether they're right-handed or a leftie!
The Expert View
You may have had to learn these past 20 months how to function on very little sleep, but your toddler still needs 12-14 hours to help them not just replenish energy, but also to grow. Stick to regular bedtimes so their own little body clock develops naturally. It also helps if they feel in control of the routine, so let them choose their bedtime toy or story. More on getting your toddler to sleep.
One of the most enjoyable things about this stage is seeing your toddler building up their vocabulary. They can learn how to pronounce new words and make new sounds by watching the movement of your lips, so whenever possible, try getting down to your toddler's level while you talk to them.
Food inspiration becomes much harder to come by when you've got an extra little mouth to feed! Why not try our food diary and meal planner for some yummy ideas that are perfect for growing tums.
Your toddler should be enjoying 2-3 snacks each day, but try to do all you can to avoid those high in sugar or salt. Look for snacks that are higher in nutrients instead, such as swapping crisps for cucumber, carrot sticks or a banana instead.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health. SMA® PRO Toddler Milk and SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk are suitable for young children from 1-3 years, as part of a healthy balanced diet and these are not a breast milk substitute. SMA® Organic Growing Up Milk is suitable for young children from the 12th month, as part of a healthy balanced diet and it is not a breast milk substitute.
