You and your baby
Month 8 news

Your little champ is growing more curious by the day. Baby's brain is working overtime to understand the world, so they'll turn to hear a voice or look at something that catches their eye. They are also able to sit unassisted and get into a sitting position from lying on their belly. After all, it won't be long until they're crawling, cruising and toddling around all by themselves...
The Expert View
You and your baby are probably moving on from mushy foods and purees. Soft finger foods will be going down a treat and you can also start thinking about food mashed up with a fork like fish or potatoes. Remember, your little one is still getting most of their nourishment from milk (breastmilk or about 500ml if your baby is on formula). Cows milk should not be offered as the main milk drink until your little bundle is 1 year old. Small amounts of pasteurised full fat cows' milk can be used to prepare weaning foods from 6 months onwards.

Need to know
Ready to introduce a beaker or cup into your routine? A lot of mums aim to do this at this stage and have all bottles cut out by 12 months. It's best to try introducing the cup at a meal time, when baby is not too tired.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health. SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk and SMA® Organic Follow-on Milk are for babies over 6 months, as part of a varied weaning diet. Not intended to replace breastfeeding. The decision to start weaning or to use these products before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby's individual needs.
